Girl Scout Career Badge

Last week at my full-time job (web developer for PHP, in Valparaiso) I was approached by the sales manager to give a job presentation to the local girl scouts. The local group is required to interview individuals at their job / career, ask questions, etc. In tern, the girls earn a “badge” to add to their belts.

Initially I was very pretty surprised that the girl scouts were interested in web design and development. I agreed to help them earn their badges without a second thought. This was a great opportunity to help grow our industry, give back to the community, and most importantly help the local girl scouts out.

Overall, everything went really well! Short of me randomly speaking geek to young girls who don’t have a clue about web design the career overview went really smooth.

I briefly covered these topics:
• my art / design background
• education
• career / freelance work
• showcase of the sites in development at php
• transition into the web
• careers in the web industry
• open panel questions and answer

It’s a great feeling to be requested to give such an interview, but to also give back in different ways to the community and the individuals that attended. The girl scouts may be young now, but you never know – maybe one day we’ll have a local web-rock-star that attended and was inspired.

Sadly, the girls brought me no cookies! However, that did not go without saying – yes, I gave them a hard time about it.
I am hoping in my near future to be showered with girl scout cookies in return! If not, well, I could stand to stay away from the treats.

Below are a couple of pictures of my office and the meeting.
